How to use Bump Keys:
The keys on this website use the pull back method. The pull back method is implemented by inserting the key into the lock, and pulling it back one click. Once in position rap the “handle” of the key with a bump hammer or equally weighted device.
Timing is everything with Bumping. When you rap the “handle” of the key, you must turn the key. Not at exactly the same time, but slightly after, or you can apply very light turning tension at the same time of rapping the key. To get a good feel for how hard you should turn the bump key, take the key that was made to open the lock. Insert it into the lock and turn it. Pay attention to the amount of force it takes to start turning the key in the lock. This is the same amount of force or pressure you should use when bumping that type of lock.
Bumping takes practice, so be patient, and try different techniques and amounts of force when rapping the key, and when turning the key.
How to make bump keys:
The document below provides the names of the tools needed, where to get them, and how to use them to make your own bump keys. It includes a chart that has the depth measurements for a number of different lock manufacturers, and it also includes a printable template sheet for bump keys. All you would have to do is print the template sheet onto label paper, cut out the key or keys you would like to hand file, and stick the cut outs to a blank that you pick up from the local hardware store. From there you just need to file down the key until it matches the template.
These procedures take practice, and many tries before you can get a working key, but for the “do it yourselfer” this is a great document.
